Katahdin Cultural Center has been serving the Millinocket community since some time in 2005.
After only a little over a year, there have been plenty of changes to the old Newberry’s building, Yes, the Town of Millinocket, which gave $30,000 to Guilds last year, has only to look at the building to see just how much it has changed!
During the Budget Review hearing last spring, Guilds requested from the Millinocket Town Council $100,000 to support his business venture, but had to accept a paltry $30,000 that was approved by the majority.
No one really seemed to notice that the project was under the auspices of Guilds' LLC, which made the town's donation illegal. It was pointed out to the council at the budget hearing, but the majority of the council thought it better to ignore that little point.
At that time, Guilds promised that he would have the façade of the building completed by July 4th, 2005, “with or without” the town’s help, “but with would be better”.
Councilor Gail Fanjoy said at that meeting that the $30,000, which was manipulated out of the town’s surplus, would be a “starting point,” not an “ending point”.
The project was first announced as a "youth center," then a "community center," and is now known as a "cultural center."
